Evolution Korea
Until recently the Korean scientific community refrained from engaging with the creationists in fear that doing so might give the movement more credibility. Silence is no longer an alternative.
The STR has been fighting to eliminate the content on evolution from textbooks, including the discovery that the feathered Archaeopteryx was an ancestral bird. This is only one aspect of how the concept of development has changed.
What is Evolution?
The theory of evolution is a scientific one that explains the evolution of the genetic traits of living organisms over time. The theory is based on fact that living things adapt to their surroundings which can result in changes in genes or even whole genomes. Over the course of many generations, these changes can result in the emergence of new species. The predominant theory of evolution is known as natural selection, which explains the process that allows individuals with advantageous characteristics survive and reproduce more frequently than those with disadvantageous characteristics. This variation in reproduction could be a catalyst to the emergence and evolution of new species.
The word "evolution" originates from the Latin word"evolution" which means unrolling or revealing, but the concept has had a variety of meanings over the years as it has taken form in the fields of science and other fields. Some early evolutionists, including Jean Baptiste de Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (Charles's grandfather), believed that existing species transformed into other species in a planned manner. Etienne Geoffroy St-Hilaire, Lamarck's embryologist pupil who coined the term "transmutation" to describe this idea. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, criticized the idea of evolution, and borrowed the term from Geoffroy’s student.
Evolutionary biologists define it more recently as a process by which living creatures develop traits that increase their chances of surviving or producing offspring. In time, genetic variation can cause a population develop new physical characteristics or biological functions. Such a shift in gene frequency is called natural selection, and it is the main driver of evolutionary changes. Changes that are not genetic, like an increase in muscle mass through exercise or diet, cannot be considered evolution because they aren't passed on to future generations.
Despite the fact that evolution has withstood the test of time and thousands of scientific experiments Creationists have taken advantage of the idea that the theory is controversial and argue that it should not be taught in schools. In South Korea, creationists have won a few victories in their fight to remove evolution from high-school textbooks which includes the removal of references to the evolutionary history of humans and the Archaeopteryx, a feathered dinosaur thought to be an ancestral bird's parent.
Why is Evolution important to humanity?
Evolution explains how Earth and all its living creatures came into existence. It is also one of the pillars of biology and helps scientists to understand how living things function and grow. Evolution also helps us understand the connections between species. Scientists study evolution to understand the natural world, and also to make important discoveries like the development of new drugs.
The evidence for evolution of biological species is overwhelming. No other scientific theory can explain more about the universe as the life on our planet. It has been rigorously examined and confirmed for many years. Many people, and even religious leaders, are in support of the scientific theory. It is important to remember that evolutionary biology doesn't conflict with religious beliefs as it only focuses on physical objects, events, and processes.
Many religious people have discovered a way to reconcile evolution with their convictions. Certain Christians, for example, believe that God created everything through evolution, and that humans share an ancestral connection to other animals.
It is important for scientists to support the teaching of evolution. In some nations around the world the anti-evolution movement is growing. In the United States, efforts to limit the teaching of evolution have made progress in some states. In South Korea, a group called the Society for Textbook Revise (STR), an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research is urging the removal of textbook content about the evolution of horses and the Avian ancestor Archaeopteryx.
Although these are alarming developments, it is important to keep in mind that the evidence for evolution is overwhelming. The evidence for evolution is based on a variety of sources, such as fossils, genetics, and the behavior of living creatures. The evidence is also independently verified by other scientists.
The vast majority of scientists believe in the theory of evolution. This support is based on various reasons. Some scientists study evolution to make practical discoveries, such as developing treatments, while others are motivated by the desire to improve the lives of animals and plant species, usually to benefit humans. Some are simply curious, while still others have a deep faith in God and seek to understand how the universe functions.
What is Creationism?
Creationists believe that God created all things in the universe. They also believe that the Bible is God's word and should be taken literally. Many creationists are Christians however, not all. Creationists are usually divided into two categories: Young Earth Creationists (YEC) or old earth creationists.
The most well-known kind of creationist is called the YEC. They believe that God created the universe exactly in the way described in the Bible. YECs believe that the biblical account of the creation's six days is true, and that the universe and life on Earth was created only recently.
OECs might not be as popular however their beliefs are as fierce like those of YECs. OECs believe that the universe and life on Earth are billions of years old, and they believe that evolution is an untruth.
Both types of creationism deny that scientific theories such as natural selection and abiogenesis are able to explain the origins of life on Earth. They assert that evolution is inconceivable because it would require miracles. The founders of modern scientific thought shunned miracles in fear that they might lose their credibility.
Some creationists accept naturalistic evolution and special creation and call their view “theistic evolution." This is sometimes also known as "continuous creationism" or "evolution from created kinds." The theory says that God creates the original species and then allows them to evolve over time. These evolutionary changes eventually will result in new species similar to the original.
Some creationists believe that God created all living things and the universe in a single event called the Great Flood. They believe that all the species of the beginning were created at the same moment and then gradually evolved. They also deny the notion of abiogenesis and claim that the emergence of self-replicating organisms from nonliving matter is impossible.
In general, creationists are against teaching evolution at schools. This is supported by numerous professional organizations such as the National Science Teachers Association, the Association for Science Teacher Education and the American Anthropological Association, and the Geological Society of America. Some scientists and educational institutions, however, are more flexible and allow both evolution and creationism to be included in their curriculum.
What is Creationism?
When people think of the concept of creationism, many of them think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolutionist group. The publishers of high school textbooks have recently announced that they will remove references to evolution from their editions. A group dubbed the Society for Textbook Revise (STR), an independent body that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research and has been the driving force behind the move. STR has secured its first victory in removing instances of the evolution of the horse and an avian ancestor called the Archeopteryx, from textbooks. Its sights are now set on removing snippets of Darwin's notorious finch research as well as on human evolution too.
STR claims that it has the support of 4,000 families and members. 에볼루션게이밍 Its goal is to weed out what it sees as the "atheist materialism" that reflects a hopeless worldview for students. It also seeks to counter the influence of American Creationists in the nation. A survey of trainee biology teachers found that about half do not believe in the concept of evolution. The causes aren't clear but could be due to religious beliefs or the absence of full-time creation scientists in the United States.
The KACR accomplished a number of things through its lectures and seminars in the past. It has a bimonthly news magazine, Creation, and has published books. One of them was a textbook on natural science with a creationist stance. This led to an interest among college communities. In 1991, a professor, along with a minister began teaching Creation Science at one university. It is still taught in the present.
On August 6 and 7, 1993, KACR hosted a second International Symposium on Creation Research. This was held in conjunction with the opening of the World Expo in Daejeon. Six foreign lecturers including ICR's John Morris and Steven Austin presented to thousands of people. KACR and its members have been giving talks on creation science at major seminaries as well. KACR plans to establish a Creation Science Education Center in the near future.
